Department of Mathematics

Overview

The department of Mathematics came into existence along with S.I.T in 1963. Right from its inception the department has striven to set high standards of teaching. The department has succeeded in this endeavor over the years.

The department of Mathematics offers programs for both graduate and post graduate students, by providing the foundation in mathematics that is crucial to the education of engineering students.

At present the department has 13 committed teaching faculty members, among them 10 are with doctorial degree, 02 of them are pursuing for Ph. D degree and one member on its non-teaching staff. The department continuously reviews and monitors the curriculum of its academic programs.

In the coming decade, apart from strengthening the existing areas, the department intends to develop areas related to mathematical aspects of scientific computing in all its manifestations. The efforts in these directions will lead to greater collaboration with other disciplines of the Institute at a level higher than at present.

Short Range Goals

To achieve excellent results in examinations, to create awareness among students in recent trends in mathematics by organizing quizzes and Olympiads, to take up sponsored projects from funding agencies such as VTU, AICTE & DST and to have more interdisciplinary interaction to pursue applied research.

Long Range Goals

The department has a long range goal of getting recognition as a leading department in curriculum development and professional activities at the regional and national level.

Program Details

The department of Mathematics has a research center under VTU.

  • The Mathematics R&D center so far produced 15 Ph.D. scholars.
  • Currently 05 Scholars are pursuing their doctoral degree.
  • Active research is being pursued in the areas of Fluid dynamics, Magneto Hydrodynamics, Graph Theory, Fuzzy Topology, Soft Topology, Finite Element methods, Natural convection problems, Heat Mass transfer, Finite difference Method, Hydrodynamic lubrication, Complex Analysis, Differential Geometry, and Manifolds.
  • Faculty members in the department collaborate with other research groups in the college.
Vision & Mission

Vision

Mathematics being the fundamental subject that provide the foundation for all Engineering subjects, we all have a task to do the best, nothing less.

Mission

To provide every under graduate and post graduate student of SIT, the required mathematical knowledge for their professional career and further study in engineering.

Activities

  • Workshops & Conferences – The department hosts seminars, workshops, and national conferences on contemporary mathematical topics.

  • Interdisciplinary Projects – Encourages students to work on projects integrating mathematics with engineering and sciences.

The department has organized:

  1. National conference on “Recent Trends in applied mathematics” (RTAM-2013) during 7th and 8th of June 2013
  2. An invited talk on “Distinguishable sets in graph theory” by Dr. P.J. Slater, Professor, Dept. of Mathematical sciences and computer science, University of Alabama, USA on 15th June 2013.
  3. One day National Workshop on “Graph Theory and Applications” (NWGTA-2015) held on 17, October 2015.
  4. Workshop on “Recent Advances in Signed Graphs and their Applications”, Sponsored by TEQIP-II during 6-8 June 2016.
  5. International Conference on “Discrete Mathematics-2016 and Graph Theory Day-XII”, Sponsored by TEQIP-II, SERB, ISRO, DRDO, during 9-11 June 2016.
  6. An invited talk on “Invisibility and Meta Materials” by Dr. Harsha Hatridurga, Dept. of Mathematics, Imperial College of London, London on 17th January 2018.
