Overview

SIT Tumakuru is one of 100 institutions selected nationally by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to host a 5G Use Case Lab — a flagship programme to build deep 5G competency in India’s higher education ecosystem.

Awarded by the Hon'ble Prime Minister · 27 October 2023
Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumkur was presented the 5G Use Case Lab award at the Global Digital Innovation event — recognising SIT’s role in building 5G capability at the grassroots level, empowering students and the startup ecosystem to develop India-specific 5G applications.
Lab is active and operational

Research projects are currently ongoing. Contact the department to explore collaboration, student projects, or industry engagement.

Objectives

The lab is designed to bridge the gap between 5G technology and real-world application — bringing students, faculty, and industry together around India’s next-generation network.

Build competencies and engagement in 5G technologies among students and the academic fraternity.

Encourage academia–industry engagement to ideate and develop 5G use cases tailored to India’s needs.

Make the Indian academia and startup ecosystem 6G-ready by building deep expertise in 5G today.

Equipment Details

The lab is equipped with a full private 5G network stack — from the radio unit and network management system to smart edge devices including a 5G camera and drone.

Currently Ongoing Use Cases

Student and faculty teams are actively working on the following research prototypes using the lab’s private 5G infrastructure.

1. 5G Enabled Smart Vitals Monitoring System

Objective

Design and implement a 5G-enabled smart vitals monitoring system that integrates GSR, heart rate, temperature, and pulse oximeter sensors to continuously measure physiological parameters — transmitting real-time health data to the cloud and healthcare providers through a private 5G network for remote patient monitoring and timely medical response.

Outcome

A real-time, low-latency health monitoring prototype demonstrating 5G’s capability for secure, reliable, and continuous remote healthcare data transmission.

2. 5G Signal Based Indoor Passive Radar

Objective

Develop a Software Defined Radio (SDR)-based indoor passive radar system that utilises existing 5G signals as illuminators of opportunity — detecting and tracking human movement by processing direct and reflected signals for target detection and trajectory estimation within indoor environments.

Outcome

A prototype 5G-assisted passive radar capable of real-time detection and tracking of indoor human motion, demonstrating 5G’s potential for Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) applications in smart environments.
